LEARN MORE ABOUT THE FIVE DIMENSIONS OF MEANINGFUL CHANGE (5DMC)

Welcome! I am Lou Irwin.  Thank you for checking out my website on meaningful change.  If you are drawn to this website because you too are curious about how to start and how to sustain meaningful change in your life, congratulations! This website is about my experience (over 35 years of practice, teaching, and consulting) exploring what Gregory Bateson called “the difference that makes a difference.”  What has organically emerged in my practice I call “The Five Dimensions of Meaningful Change (5DMC):  MIND, BODY, SOUL, SYSTEM, and STORY.  My hope is that this website can be for you part narrative, part dialogue, and part workbook.  Most of all, if you are considering contacting me for psychotherapy, I want you to know that I believe the most successful therapy elevates you, the client, and your unique experience, strengths, and challenges.  If you choose to engage in therapy with me, my goal would be to draw on your own resources, using the therapeutic structure I have developed, so that your own unique, empowering narrative about your life emerges.  One step at a time, one action at a time, such a life-affirming WISE STORY will organically connect to your own WISE MIND, WISE BODY, and WISE SOUL.  As your “wild and precious life” (Mary Oliver) continues to develop, you will also engage differently and more positively in all the SYSTEMS in which your life is embedded—family systems, friendship circles, work systems, political systems, ecological systems and more.  Finally, I hope that you, along with other like-minded people, will build and re-build WISE SYSTEMS that are so desperately needed in our world today.  That is my vision of the path toward meaningful change. Contact me if you are drawn to this approach.

LOU IRWN’S SHORT VERSION OF HOW TO BEGIN TO CHANGE

Start by focusing either on your MIND or your BODY. Develop the ability to notice, without judgment, whatever happens in your MIND or in your BODY. Then, develop four skills:

  1. Curiosity towards self
  2. Compassion towards self
  3. Curiosity towards others
  4. Compassion towards others

The most difficult part of these four skills is to validate one’s self without invalidating the other person and to validate the other person without invalidating one’s self.

You might be initially hesitant to seek out help and support for personal matters, but when you do, you will feel confident that you are taking a courageous first step towards getting to a better place and being a better you.
